About us
A small Swiss start-up with a great, international team and vision.
A Swiss
success story
sun-a-wear was born in 2016 at 4 a.m. from the vision of helping as many people as possible to deal with the effects of UV radiation on the human body and to deal with it more safely. Steve, one of the founders, envisioned that one day this would be possible through a revolutionary, easy-to-use, wearable sensor technology in everyday clothing and accessories that could be tracked through an app on mobile phones. Since Steve is the tireless philanthropist and optimist that he is, he began assembling a team to make this vision a reality. The encounter with Sam, who had previously worked with UV sensors at ETH Zurich, was the beginning of this Swiss start-up.
Already, hundreds of users are enthusiastic and use their sun-a-wear sensor every day.
Product development
was not as easy as hoped
After doing lots of tests and interviewing people in focus groups to understand what their concerns are about the effects of the sun and sunscreen, we developed an initial product concept. We were even crazy enough to stand out in the cold of the Zurich snow to ask people about their sun protection behavior. We also contacted some of the world's leading experts, and invited them to a workshop in Zurich. After a lengthy and complex process, we had a prototype UV tracker to place in the hands of tester. After carefully analyzing and processing their feedback, we decided to release our first product. We learned that the step from a prototype to our envisaged product is not an easy one.
And rest assured that we shall tirelessly continue to develop and improve sun-a-wear, because our mission is to help as many people as possible to deal with the health-related effects of sunlight. We will pass on the software improvements to our existing customers with free app updates.

Research
Helping to further understand the effects of UV
Our committment is to raise awareness of UV radiation and to promote research into the health effects of UV radiation. We do this by continuously improving and miniaturizing our technology with the aim of integrating our sensors into clothing and accessories. Our goal is to make sun-a-wear sensors almost invisible. We are working in parallel on the following two tracks:
Our sun-a-wear technology is an aid to help make it easier to monitor the intensity of one's sun exposure.
The second track is an important basic principle of our work: We want to promote research into UV radiation and its positive, as well as negative effects on our bodies. Such research should be carried out independent of normal corporate goals. That's why we established the Sun Awareness Institute, a Swiss foundation that supports and drives such research.
