These types of sunscreen are there

You are here:

The shelves in the supermarket and pharmacy are full of different types of sunscreen. Which one is the right one? How are they different? What do you have to pay attention to? Here you can find an overview.

There are basically two mechanisms by which sunscreens achieve their protective function: chemical protection and physical protection.

  • Chemical sun creams contain organic filters that absorb UV rays through chemical processes (i.e. convert them into heat). This prevents the UV radiation from penetrating the skin.
  • Physical sun creams are based on a layer of mostly titanium dioxide or zinc oxide reflecting or deflecting the sun's rays.

Both types of sunscreens and their ingredients have their advantages and disadvantages:

Chemical sunscreens

advantagesdisadvantage
Is applied invisibly or barely visible.Must be applied 20 minutes before sun exposure.
It is liquid, which is why it is very easy to apply cream. The substances contained can damage coral reefs.
Offer good protection against UVA and UVB radiation. Some ingredients are suspected to be harmful to health.

Physical sunscreens

advantagesdisadvantage
Protects as soon as you are in the cream. No waiting time necessary. Some creams can leave a white layer when used correctly.
Does not harm coral reefs.Have a thicker consistency and are therefore more difficult to apply.
Offer good protection against UVA and UVB radiation.May contain nanoparticles that penetrate the body.
